Organic sprays as well as non-spray options such as tick-tubes, manage the populations of dangerous ticks like the potentially harmful American dog tick. Alternative EarthCare discusses organic tick spraying for the American dog tick in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The American dog tick, also known as the wood tick, is not just a problem for our furry friends. This tick poses a threat to humans as well, transmitting diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. The American dog tick most commonly uses domestic dogs as hosts, but often those ticks fall off of dogs as they prepare to lay eggs and start on their next life cycle. This could mean the transferring of ticks to human hosts afterward, especially if the dog has brought the tick or ticks into the home where they can lay up to 5,000 eggs and cause an infestation. American dog ticks are found throughout North America but ironically are not present in the Rocky Mountain area though they transmit the disease that carries the area’s name.

The American dog tick is roughly 5mm to 15mm depending on life stage and if they are engorged after feeding. They are a light to medium brown with a flattened body and whitish to gray markings. Though bites will not always lead to infection, Nassau and Suffolk residents should know what symptoms to look for. In cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, sufferers could experience fatigue, nausea and vomiting, headaches, body pains, and the tell-tale spotted rash. In more extreme cases, victims could experience kidney or heart damage, paralysis, blood vessel damage resulting in the possible need for amputation of extremities, and even death, though severe cases are rare and usually present in those who already suffered from a compromised immune system. Tularemia causes skin ulcers, glandular swelling, and respiratory issues.

The potential damage caused by the American dog tick in people and pets makes it highly important to protect your property from these ticks as well as other dangerous and very prevalent tick species in the area. Organic spraying options provide full-coverage protection throughout the property to minimize tick migration and kill off existing populations. Spray alternatives such as permethrin treated tick-tubes assist in managing populations by killing off ticks on rodents and in their dens without hurting the wildlife.

By spraying areas such as property borders, dense ground cover, wooded areas, bushes, hedges, and other landscaping, with organic sprays, homeowners can provide wide-reaching protection minus any harmful chemicals. Sprays should take place approximately every three to four weeks.
